Part of How women founder funding options score for one £75,000 scenario

A method for reviewing women founder funding options and its limits

A disclosed method for reviewing women founder funding options, covering grouping, gates, criteria, evidence, commercial influence, reporting and what it leaves out.

A defensible review starts by grouping comparable services and disclosing what was actually examined. A grant finder, lender, equity investor, adviser and accelerator should not compete in one star table.

What to take away

  • Group comparable services and disclose what was examined rather than ranking unlike providers in one table.
  • Set gates and criteria before testing, then weight them for a stated founder scenario.
  • Grade evidence and require two reviewers for high-consequence gates such as regulatory role and total cost.
  • Disclose commercial interests and keep commercial staff out of scoring.
  • Publish evidence dates, unknowns and limitations, and archive the reviewed version with a change log.

Define the review population

State finance route, England or UK coverage, founder stage, women-led definition and review date. Build the longlist from official registers, provider pages and public scheme records. The British Business Bank's current Investing in Women Code signatory list separates lenders, angels, general partners, grant funding and other groups. Signatory status is an inclusion signal, not a quality award.

Review population and exclusions

  1. State finance route and UK coverage
  2. Define founder stage and women-led
  3. Build longlist from official registers
  4. Publish exclusions: closed, unverifiable, out of scope
  5. Do not exclude over affiliate terms

Publish exclusions. Remove closed schemes, unverifiable entities and services outside scope. Do not exclude a provider merely because it declined affiliate terms or free access.

Set criteria before testing

Use gates for verifiable legal identity, required regulatory status, clear current terms, accessible contact and safe data handling. Score eligible entries on route fit, transparent eligibility, whole cost, founder effort, evidence, access, support, complaints and exit.

Gates and scoring criteria

  • Verifiable legal identity
  • Required regulatory status
  • Clear current terms
  • Accessible contact
  • Safe data handling
  • Score route fit, whole cost, evidence, access, support, complaints, exit
  • Weight for stated founder scenario

Weight criteria for a stated founder scenario. A time-sensitive loan search should not use the same weighting as a research-led equity round. Preserve raw evidence so readers can apply different priorities.

Sample weighting, per cent, for two founder scenarios:

Worked example: high street bank business loan

Take a high street bank business loan from NatWest. The gates check legal identity (NatWest Bank Plc), FCA Register permissions for regulated credit, current published terms, accessible contact and a stated data handling policy. The loan-search weights above put whole cost and founder effort first.

On those weights, a clear published rate range and a fast decision path score higher than a cheaper headline rate with a slow application. The review records the evidence date and legal provider name. It reports a best fit for the stated case, not a single star rating.

Inspect first-party records

Record URL, page date, price or amount, geography, restrictions, application path and named legal provider. Verify regulated status through the FCA Register where relevant, examining permissions for the activity rather than treating a search result as endorsement.

First-party record fields

  • Record URL and page date
  • Record price or amount
  • Record geography and restrictions
  • Record application path
  • Record named legal provider
  • Verify regulated status via FCA Register

Conduct genuine testing

Name the reviewer, dates, device, route, account type and scenarios. Use permitted test data. Do not claim application, customer-service or accessibility experience that did not occur.

Test discovery, eligibility explanation, document requirements, assisted contact, error recovery, complaints and exit. Separate provider response from reviewer judgement. Give the provider a chance to correct material factual errors.

Handle commercial influence

Disclose affiliate links, commissions, sponsorship, free access, investment interests and previous work. Keep commercial staff out of scoring. Apply the same evidence requirements to partners and non-partners.

Report the result

Show evidence date, scenario, criteria, score calculation, unknowns and limitations. Avoid best when no complete comparable population was reviewed. Prefer best fit for a defined case, or state that evidence is insufficient.

Schedule a refresh for terms, status and availability. Archive the reviewed version and update the change log, which records each dated correction. The evidence register holds each first-party record with URL and date. This methodology requires an independent methodology reviewer, named in the review record, before any provider verdict is published.

Calibrate evidence grades

Grade each finding as observed in testing, confirmed by a current first-party record, supported by an independent primary record, reported by the provider or unknown. A provider statement can establish its published offer but cannot independently prove an outcome.

Require two reviewers for high-consequence gates such as regulatory role, personal liability, eligibility and total cost. Resolve disagreements through the underlying record and retain both original judgements.

Use a score only after gates. Define what each point means and prohibit half-points created to force an order. Run a sensitivity analysis by changing reasonable weights; if the winner changes easily, present a shortlist rather than a confident rank.

Test consistency with a second fictional founder whose stage or access needs differ. A provider may fit one case and fail another without either conclusion being contradictory.

Check the published copy against the evidence register line by line. Remove claims about speed, support quality, ease or accessibility when the stated method did not examine them. Date every screenshot or captured term and preserve it under the review record.

Set correction severity and response. A changed price requires a dated update; a wrong permission or application channel may require immediate withdrawal and notice to affected readers.

What the method leaves out

  • It does not rank providers outside the reviewed population.
  • It does not measure outcomes after funding, such as repayment experience or business survival.
  • It does not assess provider internal culture or test long-term support quality beyond published records.
  • It does not cover tax, legal or insolvency advice.
  • Where the scope is England only, it does not cover Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
  • It does not verify unpublished future terms or offers.
  • It does not compare financial products and non-financial support in one score.

Before you act

  • Confirm the evidence register lists a live URL and page date for every finding.
  • Check that the change log names each correction and its date.
  • Verify the independent methodology reviewer has no commercial interest in any listed provider.
  • Record the weight set used for each founder scenario in the review file.
  • Run a second founder profile and note whether the ranking changes.
  • Confirm that no provider was excluded for declining affiliate terms or free access.

Common questions

What should a review state before any provider is scored?

It should state finance route, England or UK coverage, founder stage, women-led definition and review date. The longlist should come from official registers, provider pages and public scheme records, and exclusions should be published.

How should commercial influence be handled in a review?

Disclose affiliate links, commissions, sponsorship, free access, investment interests and previous work. Keep commercial staff out of scoring, and apply the same evidence requirements to partners and non-partners. Do not exclude a provider merely because it declined affiliate terms.

When should a review avoid naming a single winner?

Avoid best when no complete comparable population was reviewed. Prefer best fit for a defined case, or state that evidence is insufficient. Run a sensitivity analysis, and if the winner changes easily, present a shortlist rather than a confident rank.
